Last night we had our first full blown panic over a potential choking session. Clara had just eaten red pesto chicken puree for dinner for the first time and just as she was finishing up she started to make a really strange coughing noise like there was something tickling her throat. We gave her a bit of water but she continued to do it and we couldn’t work out why.
We got her out of her high chair and let her crawl around for a little bit so that we could monitor her and she just kept on doing it – almost like there was something stuck at the back of her throat, and it was occasionally making her gag too. I gave her a milk feed but she was coughing throughout and after about two hours we finally decided that there was no way that we could put her down to sleep for the night whilst she was still doing it so we got in the car and drove to A&E.
We waited for hours to be seen, and while we were in the waiting room she stopped doing it (typical!) to the point where we were thinking about going home, but just as we were making our mind up she started up again which in a way was a relief as I was starting to think I’d been imagining it! When the doctor saw us, she couldn’t identify anything from looking into her mouth but referred us for a throat x-ray just in case as she wasn’t happy to send us home without knowing that there wasn’t anything lodged.
The x-ray came back clear so they let us go home in the end with no real explanation for what had been causing it, except that maybe she had scratched it with something she had eaten – I guess we will never know! I reckon it was probably a bit of tomato skin from the food, or perhaps a hair that she had managed to eat or something like that. Enough to irritate but not enough to cause her any harm.
Anyway, bless her, it was the longest night and somehow she stayed awake for the whole time we were there. We didn’t get home until nearly 3:30am so ended up having to give swimming a miss this morning unfortunately, but I think we all needed the lie-in!! She is still coughing a bit today but nowhere near as bad so hopefully it will just fizzle out over the course of the next few days.
