Weaning – week 5

19/04/201624/06/2016

weaning week 5

Food this week consisted of three meals again for each day, and we also had our first attempt at finger food by giving Clara a mango stone to gnaw at for a little while. It was pretty slippery for her to keep in her hands so I have since purchased some wheatgerm that we can sprinkle on any other slippery foods in order to make them easier for her to hold, but in general she seemed to have fun with it! She did manage to break quite a large bit of fruit off from the stone at one point which scared us a bit as it could have been a choking hazard, so we called an end to it for the day, but I know that at some point we are going to have to learn to trust her to eat chunkier bits of food so hopefully the fear factor will ease off as time goes on!

Weaning – week 4

12/04/201607/06/2016

weaning week 4

Food this week has been fun, and we have begun to introduce some common allergens to Clara’s diet to see how she gets on with them. She had baby rice and yoghurt with no sign of a reaction, but we introduced egg for the first time with more mixed success. On the plus side, Clara seemed to enjoy it, however, she threw up quite a bit afterwards so she may have an allergy – we will need to test this again at a later point. I read somewhere that yolks have a lower allergy risk than whites, so maybe next time we try egg we will just do the yolks and then reintroduce the whites again a bit later on.

Weaning – week 3

weaning week 3
Our cheeky little sausage

Moving onto our third week of weaning and we upped it to both lunch and dinner each day this week as Clara had started to get the hang of mealtimes and we felt she could handle an extra session. We also had our first potential allergic reaction as she came out in some hives on her face soon after eating aubergine for the first time so I think we will avoid repeating that one again in the near future and maybe give it a couple of months before we give it another try.

Weaning – week 2

29/03/201607/06/2016

weaning week 2

Week two of Clara on solids done and dusted and we are starting to get quite a stockpile of foods for her prepped and ready in the freezer! I’m finding it really convenient to have a couple of days where I cook up quite a few purees and have a freezing session as it means that there are always meals on hand in the freezer for any times when I don’t have the time to prepare something from scratch. I imagine this will become invaluable once Clara is onto two or three meals a day as well!

Weaning – day 7

22/03/201602/06/2016

weaning day 7

So we have come to the end of our first week and today’s food was pea puree. I sieved this one to make sure there were no tough skins in it and ended up with a lovely smooth vivid green puree which Clara loved.

Weaning – day 6

weaning day 6

Today was my favourite (and Jamie’s worst nightmare)… avocado! This was also definitely the easiest to prepare so far as well as no cooking or blending was involved – it was just a case of simply mashing it up to a puree with a fork. I did thin it down a little bit with some breast milk just to make it a bit smoother and easier for Clara to eat as it was slightly underripe, but other than this it was good to go!

Weaning – day 5

20/03/201623/05/2016

weaning day 5

On to day 5 of solids and today we gave cabbage a go. I hadn’t steamed cabbage before but will definitely do this again in future as it was so quick! I managed to get this one to a really good consistency that I was happy with, although I did strain it through a sieve just to make sure that there were no stringy fibrous pieces left in it so it was very smooth (I also did this for yesterday’s green beans too).

Weaning – day 4

19/03/201623/05/2016

weaning day 4

On today’s menu was green bean puree. Clara had been in a bit of a funny mood today – acting a bit erratically and having quite a few teething ‘moments’ so we were a bit unsure how dinner would go this evening and to be honest it wasn’t particularly successful. She pretty much turned her nose up at the food and just wasn’t really in the mood to hold the spoon so we kept meal time pretty short. We helped her to have a bit of a taste of it and a sip of water but we got her back out of her high chair soon after as she was about to kick off! Guess we will go back to green beans again at a later date!!

Weaning – day 3

18/03/201623/05/2016

weaning day 3

Today I made cauliflower puree for Clara’s dinner which went down a treat. I’m loving making her food every evening so far, although obviously at this stage the ‘meals’ I am making her are very simplistic and just require a steamer and a hand blender. It’s great fun to put something on the table in front of her and watch her expressions to see what she makes of it and it has also increased the amount of veg that we are eating as a family too as I am having to find plenty of creative ways to use up the leftovers. Everyone’s a winner!

Weaning – day 2

17/03/201623/05/2016

Weaning day 2

Moving on to broccoli today – this was a bit trickier to prepare than the potato yesterday as it needed blending in order to get it into a puree as opposed to a bit of fork mashing and I struggled to find a suitable container to put the broccoli into in order to use the hand blender on it as it was such a small quantity. In the end, I shoved it in a cup which seemed to do the trick, albeit with a bit of splashback!
